Description

Have to pay separately (again) for a new version of the mobile app that’s compatible with the latest release. Heredis offers several charts, each of which comes with multiple variations and styles. The major highlight of Heredis 2024 is a brand-new Family Chronology chart, which allows you to view a selected person’s family as a series of timelines, making it possible to see which family members’ lives overlapped with each other. Heredis 2024 also adds a mixed ancestor and descendant wheel to its list of charts and reports. If you have any version earlier than 6.2.5, please upgrade to the latest version from Latest Free Upgrade Version 5: When I try to edit a date it gets messed up The Automatic Source Citation panefor automatically generating source citations for new and modified data.

The options for assessing source citations have been extended. All the old options are still supported, but citations can now be optionally assessed as Unreliable or Questionable (or neither), Indirect or Direct (or neither), Secondary or Primary (or neither), Derivative or Original (or neither). The Edit, Interactive Tree and Source sections gain the most love with this new release – you can now access all editing tools via the Interactive Tree view, while Source management adopts a new template-driven view, helping you collate and organise your sources in a consistent way. MacFamilyTree 10’s user-friendly interface gets another overhaul in this latest release, and a direct comparison with the previous version reveals all changes manage to combine practical improvements with being more pleasing to the eye. That’s impressive, given the high bar set by the previous release. Getting the Most from Family Historian 6, by Simon Orde, the creator of Family Historian, is a comprehensive guide to the program, for beginners and advanced users alike. Although written for version 6, it is still very relevant and useful for version 7. Another bonus with Family Historian 7 is that there's more scope to make your family tree look amazing. Not only are the layouts generally more attractive and consistent, but you also get improved designing tools and a wider range of graphics options. Family Historian 7 review: How much does it cost?

Family Historian Reviews and Awards

Heredis boasts a decent set of tools for managing your media, from photos to scanned documents. Media can be attached to a wide range of elements, from people and families to places and sources. There are some basic photo correction tools built-in, and you can easily attach photos to individuals and families, plus link people to headshots that can be selected as their profile picture. New in 2024 is the ability to rename a picture’s filename from within the program. Improvements to the Property Box (main data entry window), to make it even easier to use, especially when space is limited. Project-level fact definitions. Fact definitions specify how information is presented in reports and books. Now fact definitions can optionally be stored as part of a project, so you can be sure that if you give family members a copy of your project, any reports or books that they generate from the data will look the same. The Family Historian User Group ( www.fhug.org.uk) has a long-standing Wish List, and the most-requested features on this list, by some margin, are word processing features. All notes and Text from Source fields now support the following word processing features: Legacy is starting to look really dated, but it’s still reasonably logical, with its many tools laid out in a multi-tabbed ribbon across the top of the screen. There’s also a handy customisable My Toolbar option that allows you to put the most frequently accessed tools within easy reach. The main screen gives you five ways to view the currently selected person, including a Timeline view that can help you spot gaps in your research. However, adding or editing information involves opening one or more pop-up windows, some of which are quite cluttered and confusing to navigate (editing individuals is a case in point).

Version 7 now supports GEDCOM 5.5.1. GEDCOM is the global standard for shared genealogy data. 5.5.1 was announced in November 2019. Family Historian’s media tools focus exclusively on linking photos and other supported documents – there are no image-editing tools in sight. Files can be linked to people, families, events, places and sources, and Family Historian was the first family history software program to frame people’s heads in photos. Recording associates of individuals and sources of data is also important to genealogists. Using the Witnesses feature, you are able to add other persons to a fact or event. You can assign them roles in this event, and, in doing so, make cluster and collateral research easier. Timelines If you are a user of The Master Genealogist, please see Frequently Asked Questions – for TMG Users.Verdict: RootsMagic 9 offers refinement over game-changing new features, but despite some annoyances remains excellent value for money. Heredis: The pros and cons This is the name of the world-wide standard for sharing genealogical data. The latest version is 5.5. Family Historian was designed from the ground up to be 100% GEDCOM-compatible and 100% GEDCOM-complete – that is, it can load all GEDCOM 5.5 fields and can save all of its data to the GEDCOM format. In fact, Family Historian uses GEDCOM as its own ‘native’ file format. So unlike other applications, you do not have to convert Family Historian files to the GEDCOM format. They already are in the GEDCOM format. In Family Historian reports it says that person X has died when they haven’t. Why is this and what can I do about it? RootsMagic 9 features the exact same user interface as its immediate predecessor. That means if you’ve taken the time to relearn RootsMagic 8’s overhauled navigation, you’ll have no problems adapting to version 9. If you are thinking of investing in Family Historian 7, be aware that your computer will need to have Windows 10, 8.1, 8 or 7 installed on it. Family Historian 7 review: Ease of use Sort dates (briefly mentioned in relation to TMG Import). Sort dates are an optional additional tool for specifying how facts should be sorted

Powerful built-in scripting toolscan be used to automate repetitive tasks, make extensive one-off changes to your data, or even to create your own new tools or new kinds of output. If you want, you can even use them to create plugins for submission to the Family Historian Plugin Store (see above). New version released every year, necessitating regular paid-for upgrades to take advantage of any new features. Family Historian 7 also features valuable source citation templates based on Elizabeth Shown Mill’s Evidence Explained. A second set of templates conforms to requirements at the University of Strathclyde. When you enter a record, you can immediately include a citation and source data to stay on top of your work. Using Family Historian 7’s data entry assistants, you can enter sources based on type and geographic region. If a person is said to have died in reports, this must be because there is a death event in their list of events and attributes. To solve the problem, open the Property Dialog for the person in question, select the Facts tab, locate the death event and delete it. Before attempting to install the program for the first time, please make sure that you have an activation code for Version 7. You will not be able to run the program without one.Fonts and text styles (bold, italic, underline and strike-out), text and highlight colouring, paragraph styles (bullets, indentation, alignment). Undo/Redo buttons on the Note Window toolbar, allow multi-level changes to be undone or redone. This is over and above the usual multi-level undo/redo on the main Edit menu.

One last thing about pricing: if you want to install Family Historian 7 on multiple computers (for example, in a school or library), you can get money off. Basically, the more installations you have, the less it'll cost. Should you buy Family Historian 7? Reports can be viewed in the redesigned Report Window. This feature also supports a bibliography to document your sources. Reports available in Family Historian 7 include the Calendar, the Individual Scrapbook and Timeline, Research Notes, and Sources and Citations. You can also generate detailed reports on specific records. Historical Maps FTM’s Publish tool contains a wide range of charting and reporting options, along with tools for writing and publishing your own books. They’re easy to use, but also extremely customisable, and you’re able to make changes and see their effects in real time instead of having to regenerate the chart or report. One highlight is Smart Stories, which encourages you to write your own reports while making it easy to insert elements of a person’s life from your research into the text, which you’re then free to edit or rewrite. New standard queries and enhancements to the Query Window. Queries can now be accessed directly from the main toolbar, and organised by subject matter.
