In fact, making an effort to do some activities alone can take the pressure off having to agree on activities and give you stories to tell when you come back together. Of course, every family dynamic is different and causes different types of stress depending on our circumstances. Whether you want to visit a childhood friend or see the new action-hero movie, stating your desires before the holiday will manage expectations, resulting in reduced conflict and guilt. In the introduction Jack tells us it was originally going to be just him until his parents, Michael and Hilary, muscled their way in, and in my humble opinion, it wouldn't have been half as brilliant without them.

They inflame all your existing tensions into a conflagration of logistics and competing desires, all fanned by the impossible pressure of having the most amazing and relaxing time. It’s a chance to spend quality time together but that doesn’t mean you have to spend every moment together. I wasn’t expecting it to be this good as I read his previous book before and thought it was a good read but not one I would read again.

In many ways, the crazed conflict ridden Whitehall family dynamics will feel unnervingly familiar to many of us, the family knows us best, inside and out, are aware of all our weaknesses and will never let us forget our mistakes. Was expecting this to be more original than it turned out to be, which is a shame as Jack and Michael have the potential to be funny, but sadly this book felt like a quick cash grab from the popularity of their last book.You aren’t going to convince Uncle Charlie to vote for a Democrat and he isn’t going to convince you to switch sides either.

Jack Whitehall, of whom I had no prior knowledge before listening to this book, and his family are so weird and endearing that I'll probably listen to another book.
