About this deal

Switching between effects is simple and fast, and they all look pretty cool! If you have NZXT Hue+ strip lights, you can sync these to have the same animation as your fans, which is pretty neat. Sadly, it’s not possible to automatically coordinate your CPU cooler’s LEDs, at least with the Kraken X61 that we have installed in the XSR test rig. Glue together both squares with strong glue and hold together until you are confident the glue is dry. Once dry tie the centre tightly to create a bow shape. Then once the string is secure tease two of the edges together and glue to secure them, this will start to form your fan shape.

Finally, floor fans, which tend to be larger and so can cool a larger room - you might find them in gyms or conference centres.

A note on availability: during warm temperatures, many of the fans we recommend sell out. Where possible, we will recommend alternative retailers or similar fans.

Once connected, the colour of the Aer RGB fans is controlled through the NZXT CAM software. You can find the appropriate section in Tuning > Lighting. Here, you can choose from: Tower fans are a better choice for bedrooms or living rooms, since they don’t take up much room on the floor but reach a larger area than a desk fan would.

Remember that each fan has one power connector, plus one cable in, and one cable out (for all but your last fan). Think about where these cables will lie — ideally you want them out of sight. Controlling the fans is done via the NZXT Cam software. When running the app for the first time, remember to select the Hue+ module from the list of options, to ensure that it shows up properly. If the fans don’t appear in the software, ensure that your USB header cable is plugged in properly at both ends. Start by folding your two square pieces of paper accordion style into 1cm folds. However, if you have a scalloped edge, be sure to keep this in the outside edges as you fold. Once folded, press down on your fan shape to secure the folds; you can use a ruler for this. It’s no exaggeration to say that this is the king of pedestal fans. The first thing I notice (after how easy it is to assemble) is that it has both horizontal and vertical oscillation which, coupled with a powerful airflow of 1,653m³ph gives it unrivalled room-cooling capabilities. However it feels natural, like a gentle breeze. This TurboForce Power Fan weighs just over a kilogram and is small enough to sit on a window ledge, on your bedside table or bring into the office for your desk. It even comes with a wall mount, if you’d prefer it on a wall. For a small fan, the TurboForce is relatively powerful and has a 90 degree oscillating head.

It’s also very quiet on its lowest settings, with a whispery minimum noise level of 20db and a maximum of 60db (roughly equivalent to the noise from a dishwasher). It has an ‘eco’ mode that adjusts the speed of the fan based on the temperature of the room, a ‘natural’ mode that replicates a breeze, plus a sleep timer, night light and a handy magnetic remote. We recorded temperatures at idle and under load, then compared the results with our original NZXT Manta case fans and our Corsair ML140 replacements. Idle The results were as expected, with the Aer coming in between the original NZXT case fans that were installed in the Manta and the Corsair ML140 magnetic levitation fans we tested earlier this year. Load noise was unaffected, as this was dominated by the CPU and GPU fans running in our test system.

Finally, if we’re honest, not many fans look nice. If you’re buying one for your home, consider biting the bullet price-wise and investing in a futuristic, bladeless Dyson or an unobtrusive tower fan. Where the data is available, look for a fan with a higher airflow than 150m³ per hour as a measure of its cooling power. Most of the fans we recommend are three to ten times more powerful than that on their highest settings. Yes, desk fans are generally the cheapest and lowest-powered but are usually the best choice at close range. (There are also handheld fans, handy in a sweltering tube train, but so low-powered that we don’t review them here.) The final step was the most annoying. Basically, you have to run cables from the Hue+ to your first fan, then from the first fan to the second fan, and so on until all of your fans are connected. (This means there’s one slot left on the Hue+ you can use for something else, e.g. the gorgeous Hue+ lighting strips). Again, there’s no groove to route the cables on the fans, so these cables also have to sit somewhere outside. Thankfully, the Manta case we’re using does have a lot of extra internal space to play with and the cables are quite thin, so it’s not the end of the world.

I found the lighting effects on offer are pretty solid; everything you can think of is here. You can choose from static colours, heart beats, audio visualisers, in-game actions or even use your lights as a CPU or GPU temperature gauge. It would be nice to see more comprehensive custom options, and particularly a way to share your custom effects with your friends or the internet at large. Then, either cut out the centre portion and message on your cutting machine. Or use a stamp and punch to create a centre. You could even make a smaller fan with tissue paper. This box has got to fit somewhere in your PC… bonus points if it’s still actually accessible without removing it, too. Think about the placement of the Hue+ box and the orientation of each fan (and therefore its airflow and lighting) before you start. Secondly, look for a quiet fan: generally they range between 20dB at low fan speeds to 70dB at high speed. 20dB is about the same as a human whisper, 70dB is loud enough to hear over the chatter in an office. It has an easy-to-use sleep timer and an ‘Auto’ mode that adjusts the fan speed according to the temperature. However, the reason I loved it is that you genuinely want to have on display. Let’s face it, fans aren’t always stylish, but the Dyson’s bladeless loop is a thing of beauty. Other details are also well thought out, right down to the compact remote that can be stored magnetically on top of the fan.
