My simple prototype drill point splitter is shown at left. Point splitting is a special method of web thinning that extends the cutting lips almost to the center of the drill face. This improves cutting efficiency and reduces the thrust required while drilling. I built this from scrap so it was necessary to take some liberties with the design, plus some minor changes would make it easier to build with the tooling I have available. If I were building again I'd try a 3/8" body rather than 1/2" to make cutting the slit easier - I don't have a 1/16" end mill so I used a 1/16" Woodruff cutter to make the slots - a thinner body would make this easier. I used a 608ZZ bearing so it was necessary to use a bushing to fit it to the 1/4" internal shaft.

There are a variety of drill bit sharpeners available on the market. If you’ve never used one before, the choice can be quite confusing. To save you hours of research, we’ve done the hard work for you and provided you with a rundown of the 7 best drill bit sharpeners available on the market today. Here the grinder is fixed to a wood base and the trunnion table is raised to the wheel's center height. This provided space for a nice drawer to hold the collets and other tools. It is straightforward to fit the motion control to a specific motor and mounting plate. However, in replacing my original motor the minimum work approach was to place the new motor so the wheel has the same relation to the motion control as it had with the original motor. The 94071 wheel, even with the rubber feet removed, is higher than with my original motor. So, I mounted it using a scrap of angle iron to which the motor base sans feet was bolted. The angle iron was trimmed to fit the space available. Spacers were added under the angle to set the wheel height to match the original. I had to remove the holders for the tool rests and reverse the motor on its base so the wheel rotates CCW and the switch is accessible. In most instructional articles or videos, the person talks about sharpening their drill bit at a 60-degree angle. While this is confusing given the general angles discussed above, the simple answer is that 60 degrees is roughly half of 118 degrees. They are sharpening one side of the bit point at a time.A sharp drill bit will work faster and give you a more accurate result. A bit with a dull tip won’t dig in easily. This means that the tip is likely to slip, and you’ll end up with a hole in an incorrect spot. However, you can easily drill a perfect hole with a sharp drill bit.

Construction techniques are similar to the small vise and collets in many ways. The vise body is drilled 3/8" except the last 3/8" which is drilled 1/4" and reamed with a 15 degree reamer made from 3/8 drill rod as a tapered D bit - same technique as the small collets. The last 1/16" is not reamed, remaining 1/4". Sharpening drill bits on a grinder requires a bit of technical knowledge. While Drill Doctors are a lot simpler and come with operating instructions, they work a little like a fancy pencil sharpener. Here’s how to sharpen your drill bits on a grinder. Safety First Whether you are a beginner or a professional, sharpening your drill bits is always a good idea; even the best drill bits can be expected to dull with time. Blunt bits need you to apply more pressure to get the same result, creating a higher risk of your drill slipping and ruining the piece or injuring you. Types of Drill Bit Sharpeners I am glad to know you have been able to use this. It seems one option would be to remount the sharpening guide so the bit touches the side of the grinding wheel. I know that is not recommended practice, but you can probably get a way with it for sharpening a few drills now and then. Another option would be to get a new abrasive wheel and use you old wheel for rough work. On the construction subject, this product seems and feels pretty tough. Plus, there are slots on the bottom that you can use to mount the machine to just about any workbench. This way, you'll be able to reduce vibrations and make this sharpener much more practical since you won't have to support its frame with your second hand.If you use power tools on a daily basis, chances are you go through your drilling bits and other lathe and woodworking tools rather fast. The solution to this problem is getting a special drill bit sharpener that allows prolonging the service life of your regular bits for much longer. Using a sharpener instead of manually sharpening your bits should make the job easier and give you a more accurate point. You want to ensure that the sharpener is easy to set up and use. It should require minimal effort from you to get a nice sharp point on your bit. Does the Sharpener Require Maintenance? Why we like it: This sharpener is specialized for getting exactly the right angle on any drill bit you might own, no matter the size, material, or purpose.

You might also notice chips or dents on your bits that need to be smoothed out. A bench grinder is often best for this purpose but it can be done on a Drill Doctor DD500X; it will just take a little longer. Ensure that you wear gloves when you’re sharpening your bits. This will help you avoid any injuries to your fingers, especially from small splinters of shaved-off metal. Drill bits are used for creating holes in a variety of materials. The angle of the tip of the bit, known as the point angle, needs to be suited to your task to attain the best efficiency while drilling.

The model's pretty versatile too. You'll be able to work with HSS titanium, cobalt, and carbon steel bits. In fact, you'll be able to work with just about any drill bit ranging from 3 to 13 millimetres (3/32 to 1/2 inches). Replace the grinding wheels when they are losing their efficiency. On a Drill Doctor, this is around every 200 uses, while a larger wheel on a grinder will usually last much longer. If the wheel on your grinder looks worn smooth or one side has worn down more than the other, making it unevenly balanced, it should be replaced. Why we like it: This multifunctional grinder is a great addition to a home workshop that doesn’t break the bank.
