This is a great historic fiction (based in fact) about the gay community in the early 1800s, the cruelty and persecution they faced. In reading mystical love poetry of this tradition, it is hard to determine whether a particular poem is meant for a tender young beloved, for the writer's husband or wife, for a spiritual teacher, for the Prophet Muhammad, or for God. The truth of the matter is that it is typically written for all of them, and all at once."In most things we do, we choose to always come from a place of love and compassion. Looking at them initially you wouldn’t necessarily say they’re reconstructions of the same subject. They show how identity isn’t necessarily fixed to a single outer appearance or prescribed gender.

Frankly, as I know ZL to be a Christian I was worried that this was going to be dripping with thought terminating clichés, but I am pleased to tell you it was not. I'm very happy to know he got help, knows that mental health is something that can't be "cured", and continues to get help when needed. I love that he advocates for Mental Health on his social media and as an ambassador for the Active Minds, a non-profit, young adult mental health advocacy program. A fine collection of poetry from the Islamic tradition, including such authors as Rumi (of course!), the Qur'an, Hadith, Qudsi, Zol Nun, Hafez, and others. Much of the poetry and excerpts derive from the Sufi mystical tradition. As with any form of poetry, one must read, reflect, then re-read and reflect again. This book is mostly about Zac's experiences and what he learned about himself, but he also shares helpful tips about things that helped him that may be helpful for the reader. Even just describing some of the treatments and therapies he experienced was helpful for me. I too have a horribly mean inner voice and will now be investigating DBT since I didn't know there was a specific therapy for that. Those who are struggling with mental and emotional health issues may find this book helpful either because Zac's tips and suggestions are helpful or because they feel less alone in their struggles.

Jesus gives us further direction: “Pray for those who mistreat you.” He doesn’t mean to pray the imprecatory psalms! He means to pray sincerely for their well-being, which probably includes their conversion to Christ. You can rest assured that if the person does not repent, God will bring His righteous judgment upon him in due time. But rather than feeling sorry for yourself because you have been mistreated, feel compassion for this sinner who is headed for hell, if God does not intervene. Pray that God would be merciful in saving the person for His glory. The term radical may have positive and negative connotations within any context. Overall, it can be positive when one loves with unconditional acceptance and respect-- or negative when it comes with resistance or feelings of resentment at being told to love if one isn’t ready or willing to do so.
