In a way, level setting represents the final frontier for non-engineers wanting to take control of the recording process. His day job is educator, freelance recording, mixing, mastering engineer, and drummer, keyboardist, vocalist for anyone with room on the bus. The fully immersive UI and sleek design make it one of the most streamlined interfaces on the market. Pressing and holding one of these buttons toggles muting, while a fourth button labelled F can perform one of four assignable functions: Mono, Alt Speaker switching, Dim and Talkback enable.

The EVO 16 interface also comes complete with a software bundle, providing everything you need to start recording music. The 24-bit/96kHz interface is equipped with eight of Audient’s EVO mic preamps, each providing 58dB of gain, with the on-board converters boasting 121dB of dynamic range.

Whereas the smaller EVOs offer only that LED halo to provide visual feedback, the EVO 16 has a square, high‑resolution colour display; and the idea behind Motion UI is to give the user immediate and clear indication of whatever it is they’re doing at the moment.

If that wasn’t enough, you can customise your advanced monitoring controls by using the assignable ‘F’ (function) button. Simply put, every adjustment is displayed on the screen in real time, letting the user make changes on the fly and take full control of the recording session without ever needing to look at the computer. Please note that this extended warranty is currently only available on products sold within the UK, EU or EEA, and is subject to the terms and conditions as detailed on the extended warranty certificate provided. Engineered to simplify your workflow, the EVO Mixer enables you to effortlessly set up and route your inputs + outputs, provide ultra-low latency monitoring, set up dedicated artist headphone mixes and so much more.At one end of the scale, you can get a healthy level from close‑miked speech with a moving‑coil dynamic mic, and on the other, you can record drums without clipping. Whether you’re recording drums or taking on a full band, EVO 16’s optical inputs and outputs have got you covered. Whether you’re recording vocals for your latest song or podcasting with friends on the go, the EVO is the perfect choice. I like the flexibility of the software and the fact that it can easily be driven from the front panel. The much touted Smartgain feature has not previously interested me on their smaller interfaces for a simple guitar or vocal, but on an 8-channel device, for setting multiple levels like with a drum kit or small ensemble, it makes more sense.

making the unit one of the quietest things in your input signal chain in most scenarios), and can tolerate a whopping +16dBu from line sources.

If I were looking for this many inputs in an easy to use, high-quality interface on a budget, there’s quite a few options these days. There’s no physical on/off switch, but the EVO 16 can be powered down by pressing and holding the main encoder. I am yet to test it but I assume/hope it leaves enough headroom on super-fast HF sources like ride cymbals and tambourines. With the onboard JFET instrument inputs, you can plug your guitar or bass directly into the interface. EVO 16 offers the intuitive user experience, professional sound and technical quality you’d expect from parent company Audient, with plenty more I/O than its smaller counterparts.
