Description

As one young intelligence contractor assigned to aid the unknown assassins who come after the Old Man observes: Allan is served the wrong drink in a bar in Bali, by an incompetent waitress, who is as dim as Herbert. Herbert predictably falls in love with the Indonesian waitress, Ni Wayan Laksmi, but cannot remember her name, so decides to call her Amanda. Amanda is very pretty, and with Allan’s help, a lot of money for bribes, and a brainless demeanour, manages to get herself appointed as Indonesia’s ambassador to France. I just couldn't make it fit in my mind, not to mention all the name dropping and political alliances that my poor brain just couldn't follow and frankly didn't care about either! You not only have to think outside the box here, you will have to stand outside it as well and make sure to drag a ton of salt with you. You won't make it otherwise! Everything in the book could have happened, but not with the satirical twist it was done with. Crazy, obscene, and cynically brilliant. It is more or less a hundred years of world history summarized in one aged old man's life story. Just imagine if it all could have been true! Indeed, an unusual rendition of the question 'what if'!

The police have no knowledge of the money and are only looking for Allan, who is known to be somewhat absent-minded. He gets caught up in criminal activity by accident and ends up, unknown to him, being hunted by both the police and a gang of murderous criminals. While we're on the subject of world leaders that Allan had dinner with, let's not forget to include Stalin and Mao; they really entertained him with amazing dinners, with the exception of Mao, who only had noodles to offer him.It can, and watching him being smart and clever and showing the younger talents sent after him that even as an old fart he's still a league above them (at least) is quite fun. Had so many unexpected events and moments in this book. Great characters including the chief inspector. Was brillant and kept me hooked the entire way through it. If in all honestly I did prefer the original story compared to the lengthy historic parts but they were very much enjoyed too. Oh dear," he said. "But, on the other hand, I must say that you've got these eggs just right, not too hard and not too runny." The Publisher Says: The international publishing sensation--over two million copies sold A reluctant centenarian much like Forrest Gump (if Gump were an explosives expert with a fondness for vodka) decides it's not too late to start over...

Allan concludes that all the world leaders he has met until now have seemed likeable enough to start with, but have proved to be insane. He decides that at least the Indonesian president, Yudhoyono, is sane.I enjoyed the audiobook re-read of The Old Man and the narration by Peter Berkrot was excellent in all voices.

Allan Karlsson is the hundred year old man who climbed out of the wind of an old age home and disappeared. He had actually fled from the restrictive confines of the old age home. On a whim, he would also steal a bag full of cash from a gang member and thus begins his adventures. There are few better ways to begin a new year than with a Thomas Perry novel . . . The Old Man is certainly one of Perry’s better books, which is high praise, considering that he has yet to write a bad one . . . It’s a sign of Perry’s talent that he makes the manner in which Chase is discovered, after seemingly rendering himself invisible, as interesting and chilling as the rest of the book. In the end, I walked away with a smile and will forever do so when I see this book on my shelves. It made me laugh at the world. For today it is okay. Tomorrow is another day. Every now and then, I need a break from the dark and twisty mysteries I favor. This book sounded like it would fit the bill as a bit of humor. On his 100th birthday, Allan decides he’s had it with the nursing home where he lives. So he literally crawls out the window. It doesn’t take long for him to get into quite an adventure. Herbert, Albert’s mentally challenged half brother, (and obviously a complete invention) is deemed worthless for the atomic bomb making effort, and sent to a Gulag. Allan too ends up there, when during another drinking binge Stalin is astounded to hear that Allan had saved General Franco’s life. Allan and Herbert find themselves sentenced to hard labour in Vladivostok. They both escape from the Gulag, but set fire to the whole of Vladivostok in the process. Dan Chase, the protagonist in Thomas Perry’s riveting new novel, THE OLD MAN, lives a quiet life in Vermont. He’s a 60-year-old retiree who takes great pleasure in walking his two loyal mutts. He’s a devoted father and grandfather who keeps in touch with his daughter by phone. Though he desperately misses his late wife, he’s generally content. Then a car appears on his tranquil street and everything changes. The driver has come to kill him for an incident that occurred 35 years earlier. To survive, Dan Chase must reawaken his survival instincts and fight a private war against younger, better-equipped, and decidedly lethal adversaries. Dan’s story takes us on a tense, often chilling ride across the United States and all the way to hostile regions of Libya.Accusing Thomas Perry of writing too many of the same kind of book is like accusing Johann Sebastian Bach of writing too many cantatas (200+). When the quality is that high and even improves over time there is no downside. You simply enjoy the story and admire the craft. a b Metcalf, Mitch (July 1, 2022). The protagonist is and has been so OCD his entire life with the early subterfuge governmental connections and also all that false identity set ups, that he didn't seem as an actual "normal" family man to me at all. His emotions strange, more than off. And Zoe? More so.
